Bloggers Unite - Unite for Human Rights - May 15th

Today is Blogger Unite Day.

As i sit hear and think about Human Rights today, I am hopeful that so many of us are doing the same thing. With all of us blogging about such an important subject, it can't help but put a lot of really good energy out there is the world. When it comes down to it, no matter what are differences may be, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, to name a few, we all have one giant commonality, we are all human.

When first thinking about Human Rights, what comes to mind is the torture and abuse suffered by those in other countries like :

Darfur
The conflict in Darfur, Sudan, has led to some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable, including systematic and widespread murder, rape, abduction and displacement. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed by both deliberate and indiscriminate attacks, and over 2.5 million civilians have been displaced.

China
According to information published by the Tibetan Center on Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), 15 Tibetan monks were detained on 10 March for staging a peaceful demonstration in Barkhor, Lhasa, the capital of Tibetan Autonomous Region. There is no information of their current whereabouts or of any charges brought against them. They are at high risk of torture and other ill-treatment.

And then I begin thinking about Human Right concerns right here in the USA. Here are some Human Rights issues that I feel strongly about;

Human Rights for Hurricane Katrina Survivors
Many residents of the Gulf coast region were evacuated because of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Nearly three years later, why are survivors who want to return still stranded and displaced? This is a really good question we need to ask our government. While the government spends countless dollars investigating Baseball and Football, people are still not able to return home.

Conscientious Objectors:

In the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of applications from soldiers refusing to participate in the war and occupation in Iraq. They have applied for conscientious objector (CO) status, which would allow them exemption from participation in war, based on reasons of conscience or conviction. However, the US government has denied most of them and has aggressively pursued soldiers who have gone absent without leave (AWOL), a crime punishable by a maximum sentence of death by firing squad.

Child Life Without Parole:
We are prosecuting younger and younger children as adults and giving them adult sentences. They may have committed adult crimes, but we need to remember that they are children. The has got to be a better solution than sending the to jail for life without parole.

Guantanamo Bay :

Recently, Amnesty International released several new disturbing details and reports of U.S. led torture and illegal detentions.

In a new report, 31-year-old Yemeni national Khaled Abdu Ahmed Saleh al-Maqtari, first detained at Abu Ghraib, recounts a regime of beatings, sleep deprivation, suspension upside-down in painful positions, intimidation by dogs, induced hypothermia and other forms of torture.

Check out the fact sheet on Guantanamo Bay here: Guantánamo Fact Sheet:

While we in the USA fight for Human Rights abroad, we must begin the fight right here a home. Those who live in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones.
